My mother
always came to stay a few days after the children were born, and Warren’s
mother came when Anne was born and helped. Anne was born on January
29, 1953. Bill and Judy both had blonde hair and blue eyes. Anne had
dark brown hair and brown eyes. I remember Warren’s Uncle Tom
visiting. Both with Bill and Judy he looked into the crib and said,
“sure looks like a Graham,” and when he returned to look
in on Anne he said, “she looks like Uncle Kenny,” who is
the only Graham with brown hair and brown eyes. Well, my mother always
thought Judy looked like me and certainly Anne did. It was fun dressing
the girls. Anne always looked different in the clothes Judy had worn
because her coloring was different.
We moved to a house on Laflin Avenue. It was large, had a nice side
porch and was a two story home. We enjoyed great neighbors there, and
I loved walking the babies. These were such good years. Warren and I
were both active in church, we used the community pool in Buckner Park,
and attended dances at Merrill Hills Country Club. Bob and Connie had
twin boys when I had Bill and another baby when I had Anne. Warren was
working at Waukesha State Bank at the time.
Peter was born on May 27, 1955. The day I found out I was expecting
Warren came home with news of going into the ministry. Actually, I had
a glass of wine ready for him planning to tell him I was pregnant –
wow. We had talked about going into the ministry when we had one child
and decided we couldn’t handle it, but now we had four.
I often wonder what it is the children remember about their childhood.
We so enjoyed them. I loved newborns and was always comfortable with
them. I took a course on how to handle newborns. I think the Red Cross
offered it. I’m sure it helped me. They were all beautiful children
and people often commented on how pretty or handsome they were. They
were happy little people and I think we all did pretty well.
