So off
we went to McCormick Campus. Warren was 34 and the children were Bill
5, Judy 3 1/2, Anne 2 and Pete 3 months. Can you believe that? We moved
into a third floor apartment in Fowler Hall. We had four small rooms
– a kitchen, two bedrooms, including one that held bunk beds and
a dresser for Bill and Judy. The second bedroom had a single bed for
Anne, and a crib for Peter. Warren and I slept on the bed in the living
room that opened up.
I remember unpacking and putting dishes in a standing white cupboard
and at one point tipping it over, and breaking dishes. We both sat down
and cried wondering how this was ever going to work out. Each room was
so small, and we shared the bathroom down the hall with 19 people. A
card on the bathroom door read “MALE, FEMALE, COUPLE, EMPTY.”
A few interesting situations took place in the bathroom. One day Judy
and Bill locked themselves in and we had to round up the maintenance
man to get them out. We were so afraid they might fall out the window.
Another time we couldn’t find Bill and Judy and when we saw a
couple in the hall waiting to get in the bathroom we discovered Bill
had put the sign on couple.
Still, there was another event. The MacDonald’s, Don and Ginny,
lived across the hall from the bathroom. Ginny went to the bathroom
during the night and she saw a man’s shoes, and knew that someone
was in there, so she ran back into their apartment yelling. Don and
some others woke up, chased the man, and finally caught him out on the
campus lawn. He was put in jail, but we worried more after that.
