We went
to Pittsburgh to share the ministry in a large church at 5th and Nagle
with Charley Bray. His parents were members of our church in Western
Springs and we had met Charlie and Nancy a few times. Charlie made it
all sound wonderful sharing a partnership and yet we knew something
was wrong at our reception the way people shook our hands saying, “we
are so glad you are here.” Within four months we knew things just
weren’t right. Warren was tossing and turning at night and finally
told me Charlie was running around with a doctor’s wife, both
Charlie and Nancy were taking classes at a nearby college, and the church
was paying for this. He had a private line and Warren could never reach
him.
We were there three years before Charlie was finally de-frocked. It
was a terrible experience for all of us. When all of this happened,
their family fell apart. Nancy moved to Florida, Charlie married the
doctor’s wife, and we lost track of them.
But, living in Pittsburgh was a nice experience for us in other ways.
We lived in the Forest Hills area about 8-10 miles from the church.
We enjoyed the community pool and the beautiful area. Our neighbors
were great. We were close to the Damasios, and the Wilsons and several
others. I played Mah Jongg with neighbors and loved it. Our house was
lovely. It was on a corner of a hill, and was English Tudor. Pete’s
room was on the third floor. We had it carpeted and fixed up so neat.
He had a sign saying “Pete’s Palace.” One day his
teacher appeared at the door saying, “I’ve gotta see it.”
A doctor had been the previous owner, the carpet a plush deep green,
the kitchen was carpeted blue, the upstairs was a deep red in our bedroom,
a nice family room in the basement, and a nice side patio. We had an
open house here for our 25th Anniversary. Judy brought Duff home during
the Christmas holidays so we could get acquainted with him. It was interesting
that we had a Westie at this point, named Duffy.
