We had planned to go to Williamsburg for our anniversary but Judy had her tonsils out in August and was so sick we cancelled and later went to Hershey, Pennsylvania for a few days. Pittsburgh was a rough move for Anne as a junior in high school. She had been so popular in Western Springs, had many friends and was just such a happy person. It was so sad for all of us to see the lack of friends, no phone ringing, etc. We cried together several times.

It was lonely for me, too, as the church was twenty minutes away and I was driving both Pete and Anne to school. I wasn’t use to the hills and my car had a shift. We would have Sue, Ellen Carolyn, Anne and Pete in the car. At first I had a terrible time getting up the hill to Damasios, sometimes I would have to back down and start over. They would all groan, some laughed, and others cried. But eventually I mastered it and really loved driving different places, it was so different and pretty. Warren and I loved driving into the mountains or exploring the river towns, lots of antique shops.

We missed our college kids and soon added Anne as she joined Judy at Carroll College. Before we actually moved to Pittsburgh during one of our visits we checked out the elementary school Sue would attend, met her teacher and when Sue attended, the students knew all about this little girl coming from Illinois.

I was sewing drapes for our home but kept getting a headache, then when I would go outside to drive and pick up the children it would go away. The next day the same thing and that evening as we were all sitting around the table for dinner someone said they had a headache and suddenly we realized we all had headaches. Warren called the gas company and someone came out right away and actually did find a crack in the flue and explained the danger it was to all of us.
