Presbytery
quickly found a church for us in Lawton, Oklahoma, and Milligan went
to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, and in two years was asked to leave.
Lawton was a great place for us to heal. It was a small church, a slower
pace with many nice people to become acquainted with. Pete and Sue were
both at Stillwater, Oklahoma State so this was a different type of move
without children. We found a lovely home not far from the church and
our healing began. We had more time for each other and we enjoyed exploring
the area. We loved taking picnics up into the Wichita Mountains to watch
sunsets. Good friends were made here and it was a wonderful neighborhood.
We had an open house at Christmas and invited the neighbors. One couple
was black and they were the last to leave. We had a note from them later
saying they had never been invited into a white home and how much they
appreciated it. He was a service man at Fort Sill, and Warren played
golf with him several times.
We joined the golf club and enjoyed golf and using the pool. It was
great having this country club for Sunday dinners and fun when the children
were home to enjoy. Sue and I took some golf lessons and Sue even had
a summer job waiting on tables. Fort Sill was interesting and we attended
several functions there. I enjoyed the smaller choir, and I even had
a solo! We enjoyed our few years there but wanted to be more accessible
to our children so started the search. We had Glenwood Springs, Colorado;
Hannibal, Missouri; St. Louis and other places to consider.
