Warren was always active in attending high school sports, plays and special events. He kept close to our teen church members in this way. In Western Springs he was a marker for football and in St. Louis he played such a big part in track, football and baseball. Once he volunteered to paint the baseball cover. I took lunch to him and it was a windy day and he was covered with blue and silver paint. He would even go with the baseball team to Jefferson City or Columbia either in the bus or sometimes he and Ralph Sitter would drive. They were gofers and would line up food, etc. and he was also the team chaplain. He retired in June 1989 and had a lovely luncheon at the church. All of the children were there. It was both sad and wonderful.

As busy as Warren was throughout his ministry he always encouraged me to do my own thing. I took many evening classes: guitar, folk art, painting, oil painting and “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.” He often stayed home with the kids, but if he couldn’t we would have a sitter. I volunteered at a hospital in Pittsburgh, and was a Welcome Wagon hostess in Lawton. I was so successful at this that when we moved to St. Louis a representative made an appointment with me and tried to talk me into doing it again. I chose not to at this time. I was also one in Pittsburgh.

In St. Louis I worked at Day Bridge Day Care for a few years and really enjoyed the 3-year-olds. I worked, or rather volunteered at Northwest Hospital for seven years at the information desk. I took the “Cuddles” course and was in with the newborns only as a substitute, because this was popular and filled. I volunteered in the Oasis Program and volunteered at New Halls Ferry School for five years on their reading program with second graders. I also did this in Kansas City for a year at Sue’s school, Clear Creek Elementary School.
