Poem for Warren

.....................................
on his 47th Birthday

A poem I wrote for Warren in 1970, his 47th Birthday

I know one is supposed to believe that our thoughts
Turn to love when spring is here.
I know this to be untrue… I want this made clear
I love you the entire year.

I love you in the deepest of winter when snow is on the ground
Walks on cold evenings, laughing at cars stuck but now found.
Christmas carols, warm houses, parties with friends, it’s so true
I look forward to each winter, but only because of you

Spring comes like a newborn child, waited for, thought about
Felt in the quickening of a warm breeze
Each phase so fresh and new, always wanted, looked forward to…
But only because of you.

I love the way your heart sings on a hot summer day
How you long to travel and be on your way
Anxious and ready to gather round children and kin
Full of life and zest, that’s the way it’s always been.
Summers are lovely, the days all to few
But once again…it’s only because of you.

When Autumn is here I do love you more
The beginning of our life and I know what’s in store
Crisp air, changing skies, football games and apple pies
Busy days and nights, children, school, its so true
But somehow I love it most of all
Of course, because of you.
